Learning Business Mandarin

Chinese is a language containing many parts, including daily communicative part, business Mandarin, written Chinese, and so on.  If you have learned the basic Chinese, how about joining us in the discussion of the business Mandarin?

Of course, business Mandarin is concerned with business. Some of you may find it not necessary to master it. Actually, it is involved many aspects in your life.

For example, when you come to a new company to work, you have to introduce yourself to your new colleagues. You are supposed to say, “你好。我叫，我是广告部的(ni3 hao3 wo3 jiao4 wo3 shi4 guang3 gao4 bu4 de1)”. That is to say, you could have a common greeting and introduce your name and then tell others what department you belong to. Generally speaking, the common department includes “企划部(qi3 hua4 bu4)”, “市场部(shi4 chang3 bu4)”, “广告部(guang3 gao4 bu4)” and some others.

To have a better Chinese conversation in business, we’d better learn some useful business words and phrases. The followings are some typical ones.

“畅销(chang4 xiao1)” means “sell well”. If you say “这本书很畅销(zhe4 ben3 shu1 hen3 chang4 xiao1)”, that means the book sells well.

“炒鱿鱼(chao3 you2 yu2)” is a phrase you have to memorize. If your boss says it to you one day, you may feel upset and angry. This phrase literally means “fry the cuttlefish”. However, the real meaning is to dismiss somebody from office. It is similar to a English sentence “You are fired”.

When it comes to business, the cost and profit can not be ignored. How to say it in Chinese? We usually use “成本(cheng2 ben3)” to express the cost and “利润(li4 run4)” to stand for “profit”.
